Sunningdale Golf Club (Old)

Sunningdale Golf Club (Old) was designed by Willie Park Junior and opened in 1901, laid out across a varied landscape of hills, heath, and woodland that had previously been thought unsuitable for golf. The course took shape during the final era of the gutty ball, and its considerable length meant it only gained widespread popularity after the Haskell ball arrived from the United States. During construction, urns containing fourteen Iron Age skeletons were unearthed on site — a reminder of the ancient ground the course occupies. The 18-hole layout earns a perfect 5.0 rating from over 90 Hole19 golfers, reflecting the enduring regard in which it is held.
