Description
PGA Aroeira No 1 sits just 25km from Lisbon, close to the coastal town of Caparica, and forms part of a wider estate that includes a second course and surrounding woodland mansions. Designed by Frank Pennink — the architect behind Vilamoura's Old Course — and opened in 1973, the layout earned the nickname 'Wentworth of Lisbon' from the UK press. The course plays to 6,650 yards through tall avenues of pine forest, where accuracy and placement off the tee matter more than raw distance. Wildlife and natural surroundings are a constant presence throughout the round. The course hosted the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997, has staged several Ladies' European Tour events, and welcomed the European Men's Club Trophy in 2013. It is also ranked among the Top 100 courses in Continental Europe. With an average rating of 4.4 from 600+ reviews on Hole19, it is one of the most consistently praised layouts in Portugal.
