The Olympic Club (Lake)

The Olympic Club (Lake) is one of the most celebrated courses in the United States, famously praised by Bobby Jones as "the best in the west." Set in San Francisco, its 18 holes wind through forest-lined fairways with views across the city. Designed by Willie Watson and built by Sam Whiting, the Lake Course opened in 1924. After storm damage in 1925–26, Whiting redesigned the layout and it reopened in 1927 with all 18 holes north of Humphrey Drive. The course has hosted five U.S. Opens, beginning in 1955, when Robert Trent Jones lengthened the course, adjusted par on several holes, and added a fairway bunker at the 6th. In 2009, Bill Love oversaw a restoration that introduced the first routing change since 1927, creating a new 8th hole in the natural amphitheater below the Clubhouse. A bunker renovation followed in 2016. The club also hosted its first U.S. Women's Championship in 2021.
