The Golf Club at Newcastle (China Creek)

The Golf Club at Newcastle (China Creek) is a popular round among Hole19 golfers in Washington, and it's easy to see why. Designed by Robert E. Cupp across gently rolling terrain in Newcastle, this 18-hole layout stretches 6,632 yards and plays to an unusual configuration of five par 3s, nine par 4s, and four par 5s. Natural preserved areas frame much of the course, while undulating fairways and well-placed bunkers add consistent challenge throughout. Trees are more prominent here than on the neighboring Coal Creek course, most notably at the 14th, where they tighten the approach to the green. Water comes into play on several holes, including a partially guarded green at the 10th, a false front on the 13th, and a demanding two-tiered green at the 17th. The finishing hole asks for a precise tee shot over a large ravine to an uphill, sloping fairway. Throughout the round, the greens are kept in superb condition and offer a true, consistent roll. The course is set against a backdrop that includes Newcastle's celebrated clubhouse, which one golf writer described as "worthy of English royalty."
