Shadow Hawk Golf Club

Shadow Hawk Golf Club is an 18-hole private course in Texas, designed by Rees Jones and recognized by Golf Digest as one of the top ten best new private courses in America in 2000, its first full year of operation. The layout follows the principles of classic course design: clear targets, subtle challenges, artistic bunkering, varied hole shapes and lengths, ample fairways, smallish greens, and a natural setting. Water is a recurring threat — the opening par-5 has it guarding the entire left side from tee to green, and the par-4 tenth presents a similar test to start the back nine. Holes 6 through 15 offer the most scoring opportunities on the card, with one standout exception: the par-3 seventh, which features arguably the most complicated green on the course. That hole made history in 2002 when member James A. Baker III made a hole-in-one, witnessed by fellow member and former President George H.W. Bush. The course closes with a risk-reward par-5 eighteenth where outcomes are rarely predictable. In June 2004, Tom Kite made par there to secure a sectional qualifying spot for his 30th consecutive U.S. Open Championship.
