Description
Oakmont Country Club, a private course in Plum, Pennsylvania, was designed by Henry Fownes and William Fownes and plays to par 72 across 18 holes from 6,100 to 7,000 yards. The layout is defined by its terrain: the Church Pews bunker on hole 3 — a mass of parallel grass ridges flanked by cavernous sand — ranks among the most recognized hazards in golf. Hole 8 is a par 3 stretching to 289 yards, one of the longest in the world. Hole 9 presents a blind tee shot, a ditch running the left side, and a green complex widely regarded as iconic. Across the course, undulating greens and sloping fairways run throughout, with ditches adding further penalty. Oakmont has hosted the U.S. Open seven times, including 1962, 1973, 1983, 2007, and 2016, along with the 1925 U.S. Amateur and the 1916 Intercollegiate Championship. A practice putting green connects to the ninth hole, and the historic clubhouse is framed by that same hole.
