Church Stretton Golf Club

Church Stretton Golf Club, an upland course in Church Stretton, England, was designed by James Braid and opened in 1898. It has been listed among The 200 Best Golf Courses in England. The layout runs across 18 holes at around 5,000 yards, with bracken and heather-lined fairways threading through hills and cavernous valleys. Greens are undulating, often raised or built into the hillside. Hole 1 is considered by many to be the hardest starting hole in the county, with a steep bank in front of the green and out of bounds to the right. Holes 2 and 7 play to uphill flags. Hole 9 has ferns narrowing the fairway. Hole 12 makes it difficult to judge whether the green slopes toward or away from the hill. Holes 13 and 14 are noted as superb driving holes. Hole 15 plays steeply downhill, and hole 16 can be driven but out of bounds punishes any wayward shot. The course is built on sandy soil. The clubhouse includes a fully licensed bar.
