Tagalong Golf & Resort

Tagalong Golf & Resort sits on the shore of Red Cedar Lake in Barron County, Wisconsin, about 20 miles northeast of Rice Lake — and it's a popular round among Hole19 golfers in Wisconsin. The course has a remarkable origin. In the early 1920s, Chicago businessman Frank Stout — said to have been the city's fifth-wealthiest man at the time — built a 9-hole course here alongside his Adirondack-style family lodge, now known as Stout's Island Lodge. Private construction began in 1916, and the course was designed as a duplicate of St. Andrews. Stout had bentgrass for the greens cut in Scotland and shipped across the ocean; a world-famous architect and a member of the Scottish nobility also made the journey. Fourteen miles of pipe were laid to irrigate the greens and fairways. The course opened in 1925 with a match between the reigning U.S. Open champion Willie Macfarlane and British Open champion "Long Jim" Barnes. Today the 18-hole layout features large, elevated greens surrounded by deep grass bunkers — a second nine having been added in more recent years.
