San Felipe Country Club

San Felipe Country Club in Del Rio, Texas, holds a notable place in golf history as the first course designed and built in Texas by civil engineer and professional golfer John Bredemus. That debut project established his reputation as an architect, and he went on to shape many important courses across Texas and Mexico. Bredemus co-founded the Texas Professional Golf Association in 1922 and was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 1991, 45 years after his death. The 9-hole layout stretches 6,148 yards to a par 72, with San Felipe Springs at its center. Water comes into play on many holes, adding both visual appeal and genuine challenge to the round. The original layout and early landscape remain largely intact, making it a prime example of early-twentieth-century golf course design. The course has undergone recent improvements, including new Hybrid Dwarf Bermuda greens, refreshed bunkers and tee boxes, fairway aeration, and a fully revamped irrigation system. The driving range was also updated as part of the work.
