Ravensworth Golf Club in Gateshead, England, is an 18-hole course that has been in play since 1906. Tight fairways, fast-running greens, and a mix of water hazards — stream, pond, ditch — combine with bunkers, trees, and out-of-bounds markers to keep accurate ball-striking at a premium throughout the round. Several holes stand out. The opening hole is one of the toughest starts you could face on any course. Hole 5 is the only par 5 on the layout. Hole 10 demands a careful tee shot, and hole 12 — Stroke Index 1 for many years — places a particular emphasis on driving ability. Rated 4.3 by 60+ Hole19 golfers, it is a popular round among Hole19 golfers in England. The clubhouse, opened in December 2003, includes The Restaurant at Ravensworth Golf Club, serving home-cooked food, a Sunday Carvery, and weekday bar meals and snacks. Despite the chill of winter, the course at Ravensworth Golf Club was in exceptional condition and far exceeded my expectations. The staff were extremely welcoming, which made for a great experience from the start. The course itself boasts some fantastic holes, featuring tight fairways and plenty of elevation changes that provide a challenging yet enjoyable round. It’s also very well priced, and I’d definitely return. My only slight negative observation was regarding the pace of play later in the morning. I was fortunate to have one of the first tee times of the day, but by around 8–9 o’clock, it appeared quite backed up—a situation that might be frustrating for later tee times. Overall, a great course and well worth a visit!
