Description

Rancho Park Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 71 championship layout in Los Angeles, California, designed by William Johnson and William P. Bell and measuring 6,630 yards. Opened in 1949 with the U.S.G.A. Public Links Championship, the course went on to host eighteen Los Angeles Opens and a run of LPGA and Senior tour events between 1978 and 1994. That history alone sets it apart among public courses in the region. The layout is challenging and undulating, demanding a high level of skill throughout. Varied lies keep players honest, and the smallish greens make precise approach shots essential. Rated 4.2 by Hole19 golfers, Rancho Park is one of the most-played courses in California on Hole19.

Rancho Park is my home golf course, it is where my teacher and I discuss the higher elevations of the game, the swing plane, Joe Louis and the great black golfers that are barely remembered now now and ghosts of faded memories of the aging black men who were the backbone of a forgotten time in golf. Talk of old caddies, greens men, hustlers, players and roustabouts. I go there for the conversation and to hear the old black pros talk of the hard path it was for a black man to gain acceptance and inclusion in the game of golf. And it is there, I tell my teacher the story of Jobe Shipman, a mixed race golden child and prophecy of a golden child to come, a tiger to breach the walls of white privilege.
