Description
Designed by Sir Henry Cotton and opened in 1966, Penina Championship Golf Course is a resort course in Alvor, Algarve, Portugal. Cotton built the layout on flat rice paddy land, planting thousands of trees and introducing streams, ditches, water hazards, subtle slopes, and elevated greens to create the character the terrain did not naturally provide. The opening five holes give an early indication of what lies ahead. Hole 1 is a par 4 with a bunker on the right, hole 2 adds bunkers left and a creek in front of the green, hole 3 narrows the target with heavy bunker protection, hole 4 is a short par 4 squeezed by bunkers on both sides, and hole 5 is a par 5 where a large water hazard guards the green. The course plays to par 73 across 18 holes. Penina has hosted the Portuguese Open on 10 occasions. It is rated 4.3 by 200+ Hole19 golfers.

Ben DaviesJune 12, 2025I have been coming to Penina since I was a child. It is tired. It needs some love. The layout is great and the course has a lot of potential. Greens are still excellent but the tee boxes and around the course, bunkers etc just need more love / attention / money. It’s just a bit scruffy and not had significant money spent on it in 20 years. Compared to other ‘golf resorts’ locally, it is a step down from even some of the relatively new / less well known places
