Mission Hills Haikou (Blackstone)

Mission Hills Haikou (Blackstone) is an 18-hole course in Haikou, Hainan, China, set across 350 acres of dramatic terrain shaped by a natural lava rock bed. The course weaves through mature trees, thick jungle vegetation, and expansive lakes and wetlands. Because the lava rock base could not easily be cut, designers worked with the natural rolling terrain to find holes that preserved the landscape — including magnificent Lychee trees that remain standing throughout the property. Rather than imposing hard edges, the design integrates lava rock directly into the layout. Irregular lines of turf meet raw rock, wild bunker edges blend into native lava, and there is only a single fairway cut with no rough — not even at bunker faces. Fairways follow the contours of the land, with surface drainage keeping the turf soft and edge-free. Forced carries over the lava bed create sharp visual contrast, while original lava rock walls and village ruins on the site have been left in place as a reminder of the land's history.
