Deer Lakes Golf Course

Deer Lakes Golf Course in Salem, Kentucky spreads its 18 holes across a landscape shaped by half a dozen lakes, flowing streams, large rock formations, and foot bridges. Dozens of tree species frame the layout, offering vivid green color in spring and a rich display in fall. Several natural landmarks stand out. A 150-foot Tulip Poplar rises near the 12th tee, a rare Chestnut Oak anchors the driving range, and a White Oak measuring 16 feet in circumference on hole 8 is estimated to be 300 years old. Each tee box features a marble monument engraved with the hole's specifications. An irrigation lake between holes 14 and 15 holds water fed by the natural Butler Spring, and a five-mile concrete cart path winds through the hills. Sandy Creek borders much of the course, home to wild turkeys, deer, and various native birds. The cart path follows Alley Lane, once part of the old Golconda Road stagecoach route between Illinois and Tennessee and a section of the Cherokee Trail of Tears from 1838. The iron bridge at the 15th tee was installed in 1898 and carried road traffic across Sandy Creek until around 1950 before being relocated to the course.
