Country Club of Fairfield

Country Club of Fairfield was founded in 1914 by Oliver Gould Jennings on a parcel of land in Fairfield, Connecticut, once known as Mosquito Hill — a stretch of onion fields sloping down to a tidal marsh. Jennings hired Seth Raynor, a protégé of Charles Blair Macdonald, to design the course. Raynor crafted a links-style layout drawing on the best holes of the British Isles, a project that required a major landfill effort spanning several years. The course officially opened in 1921, with Hall of Fame golfer Walter Hagen among those present on opening day. This was one of Raynor's first solo designs, and he went on to create notable courses including Shoreacres, Mountain Lake, and Fishers Island. A.W. Tillinghast and Robert Trent Jones Sr. also left their marks on the 18-hole layout over the years. The result is a course that has hosted the Met Open, the Connecticut Open, and the Met PGA Championship, and is widely regarded as one of the finest in the country.
