Use official golf ball markers or coins of similar size. Professional markers include alignment lines and minimal thickness to avoid affecting other putts. Avoid bulky objects that could influence ball roll on greens.
Ball markers should be roughly coin-sized (20-24mm diameter) and thin. Larger markers can distract other players or affect putts. Tournament rules often specify maximum marker sizes - check local regulations.
Place marker directly behind ball before lifting. If marker interferes with another player's line, move it one or more clubhead lengths to either side. Be sure to use a pitchmark repairer to repair any damage made to the green by your approach shot.
Magnetic markers attach conveniently to pitchmark repairers or hat brims, reducing lost markers. Look for strong magnets that won't detach during play.
Premium markers offer better durability, alignment aids, and stronger magnets. Basic markers work fine but may need replacing more often. Personalized markers make great gifts but don't affect performance.
